The State of Maine city of Lewiston, with a population bordering on 36,000, is in Androscoggin County and lays claim to being the second largest city in Maine. It boasts a rich history dating back to 1669 when inhabited by the Androscoggin tribe, and later became a magnet town for people from Quebec. In more recent times it had its own 4 furlong oval racetrack, complete with a grandstand with the capacity to seat 5,000. It offered a programme that offered Standardbred harness racing in February, and a further programme in mid-October called the ‘Overcoat Meet’ for obvious reasons. The feature race was the Pooler Memorial, and the track also branched out to offer motor racing. It closed its gates to horse racing for the final time on 17th December 1989, while today there is no evidence of the previous existence of a racetrack on the site.
